Twitter is Stupid: Social Media is About Being Social

I first signed up for Twitter about six months back when an SEO friend of mine sent me an invitation.
I found about thirteen friends who were already signed up, and became their followers. I often forgot
to look at Twitter, and when I did, I didn't really get it. I found Facebook much more interesting.
Then I started working with a company that was using Twitter as their primary source of social media
outreach. I downloaded Tweetdeck, and grew my following from under 20 to over 500 in just a few
weeks.
I now understand the allure of Twitter, it seems like such an easy way to market yourself, but the truth
is, it is largely a big waste of time.
The more people you "follow", and the more "followers" you have, the less you can keep track of any of them. One of my friends compared
using Twitter to talking to yourself really loud on a bus. I would compare it more to a busload full of
people talking really loudly to themselves. And when everyone is talking, nobody is listening. Even
worse, everyone on Twitter is trying to sell something. It's like being on a bus full of door to door sales
people. Yikes!
One of the most important assets any business has is our relationships, and this is why social media can
be such a powerful marketing tool. But building relationships isn't about talking loudly and hoping
somebody will hear you, that is the old paradigm of advertising. Building any kind of relationship is
really all about listening. The more we listen to what others want and need, the better our relationships
will be. This is true of all of our relationships whether it is with our friends, our family, our spouses, or
our co-workers and customers.
The wonderful thing about the internet is that it is a medium that makes it incredibly easy to listen. I
find it amazing how interesting the comments section of an online newspaper article can be, and I have
found myself spending more time reading comments from my community than I do the article itself.
When using social media to promote your product or brand, rather than thinking of it as a way to sell
stuff, consider it a way of reaching out to your potential audience and finding out who they are, what
their needs are and what they think about you. In the end this will be far more valuable than a few
sales. This is the golden information that will separate you from the rest and sustain you through good
times and bad.
