Zhiing vs BrighKite vs Loopt: Location Finder Service Apps

To be fair to the three location finder services I reviewed in my initial post, I recently discovered that the reason things were so slow with Brightkite and Loopt was because of the reception I was getting on my phone, and not because of the apps themselves.
Since I wrote my initial comparison of location finder services I have been experimenting with all three apps, and will give my completely unbiased, (Okay, somewhat biased) opinion on these three apps.
First of all, I want to be very honest about the fact that I am working with Zhiing. This is a very small and new company with a big heart and a lot of integrity. The atmosphere at Zhiing is one of excitement and mutual respect for everyone working to build this company. For me personally it is so wondeful to work with a company that is totally green and socially conscious just because that is a reflection of the people who founded it, not because they are trying to hop on a trend or "greenwash" their business practices.
As far as applications go, Brightkite and Loopt seem to be for a very different purpose than Zhiing. When I finally figured out how to use the other two applications, I found that they both seemed to be for the purpose of meeting new people, whereas zhiing is really focused on providing directions for yourself and people you already know.
When I first started using Zhiing I found it to be somewhat slow and cumbersome. This was fixed recently in an update. I'm not sure what they did, but it is now zippy fast. I find it to be incredibly useful for sending directions to friends that have iphones and have already downloaded Zhiing, especially if it is difficult to hear each other for some reason, like in this little video, but for people who don't have smartphones it can be very dissapointing. What happens is that the application still works, but it sends text messages directly to the phone. I experimented with how this works with my friend Ken, and asked him to relay back to me his experience.
"I got a text message asking me my location" he told me. (Obviously location finder services can't work if your phone doesn't already have some kind of internal gps system.) "So I sent it my address, and it couldn't find it. Then I sent the closest two cross streets and it texted me back an address in Florida asking to verify if this was my address. I sent it again and put Santa Barbara in and it sent me the right address, and told meto text it back if I wanted to be sent directions. So I did that and it sent me something like 8 texts. I pay 10 cents a text."
I was pretty bummed out that Ken ended up having to pay a dollar for directions I could have easily sent him myself. So, the moral of the story is, if you have to pay for texts, and you're on a tight budget, zhiing is probably not for you.
On the bright side for Zhiing, I don't think you can use either Brightkite or Loopt at al if you don't have a smartphone, so they are still ahead of the game there.
The purpose of Brightkite seems to be another avenue for keeping your fans posted on your whereabouts. The interface tells you where you are and gives you the option of either finding yourself or picking a place, at which point you decide if you want to check in, post a note or a photo. I just took a photo of this screen, moved and scaled it, and it is now saving to my profile.
When I initially set up my profile Brightkite asked me if I wanted to be public or private. The idea of letting random nearby strangers know my whereabouts seemed odd and unhealthy. For the purpose of this post I have unlocked my profile to see if anyone does attempt to seek me out. This is a brave and daring move I know, and if this is my last post, please tell my mother I love her...
One of the features I liked about Brightkite was that it has a search feature that allows you to type in places, people or posts that you are interested in. Since it knows where you are, you don't have to put your location and it will post the closest things first. Of course, the maps app on the iphone already does this for most places, but the people and posts is an additional boon.
Loopt is really similar to Brightkite, but more advanced. Loopt actually has a "Mix" feature that allows you to select what you are on Loopt for, including dating. The idea of this personally creeps me out a little, but I can see the advantage for the more adventurous single, and in actuality it is probably no more creepy than using an online dating site. Remember when online dating seemed totally weird, and now every other couple you know probably met online? So, who knows, this could be the wave of the future.
One feature I really liked about Loopt is it's "Link" feature. This allows you to link to facebook, twitter or an online journal. I already use my phone a lot to post pictures and comments to these sites, so this seems like a streamlined way to easily add online posts.
If you are looking for a new avenue for networking and updating posts, I would recommend Loopt over Brightkite. If you are looking for an easy way to get and send directions, I would recommend Zhiing.
Another feature of Zhiing that I love is the web browser component. If you download the browser add-on to either Firefox or Internet Explorer, Zhiing will place a small button next to every location on the internet. Click the little Zhiing logo of the places you want to go, type in your phone number, and wah-la! you will recieve Zhiings in your inbox that you can use to get turn by turn directions of every place you need to go. This is especially awesome if you are going on a road trip. The only complaint that I have about this feature is that it is not yet available on Safari, which is the only browser that I have on my i-phone.
This is all I have to report so far on the three major Location Finder Service Apps. I will continue experimenting with all three, and report back my findings.
