Sailing to the Dream
I recently sat down and read the business plan that I wrote when I started this company over three years ago.
It amazes me how much has changed for me since I started this business, and at the same time, how much of the business plan remains the same.
When I sat down to write the business plan I wasn't writing about what already existed, I was dreaming up what I wanted to bring into existence. At best most of what I wrote was a semi-educated guess. What amazes me now is how accurate my business plan still is in describing the business that I created, especially considering how little I really knew about running a business.
Granted, I was lucky enough to have had some amazing resources; the awesome business class I took at a community college in Tucson when I was in my early twenties and thought that I wanted to open a coffee shop., an entrepeneurship workshop in San Diego offered as an extention of my Interactive Media Certificate Program, and the wonderful, warm support of the self-employment training course through Women's Economic Ventures here in Santa Barbara.
These classes and the many books and articles I read while researching for my business were all very helpful, but nothing could legitimately prepare me for what it has really been like to run my own business. I have successfully managed to make every mistake that I was warned against making, and even a few that nobody ever thought to warn me about.
